Last year at this time, these waters were way too high to be fishing. So this annual fishing event hasn`t been held in nearly two years. But this morning they made up for lost time.
"This is the one time during the year where they can get outside and first of all go fishing. Secondly, enjoy the day. It`s very nice day,” says event organizer, Duane Anderson.
“This is a big function for them all year around. They love coming out here fishing,” says group supervisor, Jacques Lee.
This Special Fishing Day is one of the best turnouts they`ve ever had. For young Anika Butts, she`s been coming for three years with her Grandpa and hasn`t grown tired of it yet.
"I kind of helped with the food today for lunch and I`m just kind of helping out to help them get fish,” says Anika.
Many of the anglers had good luck today, reeling in a few big fish. Those who didn`t get a tug on their line still had the gorgeous day to sit by the water.
“The best of both worlds. Work and pleasure at the same time. So it`s great,” says Lee.
With a warm day of full sun and a big crowd on the lake, it was a pleasure to be out on the water today.
“This is a real good opportunity for those folks to have a nice outing,” says Anderson
“It brings their spirits up. It makes them happy. The sun shining, out in the fresh air and fishing, they love it,” says Lee.
Though they missed out on this event last year on Lake Darling, these anglers say they`re already looking forward to the Special Fishing day next year.
The Special Fishing Day was completely free for the participants. The event was funded by the Kenmare Veterans Club, Kenmare Goosefest Committee, and the Souris River Longbeards.
